Valeri Kharlamov's Life Turned Into A Movie



The new blockbuster biopic “Legenda Nomer 17” (Legend No. 17), which opens April 18, tells the story of Valery Kharlamov, one of the greatest hockey players the world has seen – and the wearer of that famous shirt number.

Kharlamov’s explosive power won instant international fame at the opening game of the 1972 Summit Series between the Soviet Union and Canada, the first time Soviet hockey players had met with professional players. He scored two goals, and the Soviets won 7–3 in a victory that shocked the Western sporting world.

The idea for the film came from the 2004 U.S. movie “Miracle,” centered on the American hockey team’s victory over the Soviet side at the 1980 Winter Olympics, said producer Leonid Vereshchagin.

“We wanted to make a similar film, but from a Russian perspective,” he said.
