Sid Abel

1949 - Montreal goalie Bill Durnan recorded his fourth consecutive shutout as the Canadiens won 1-0 at Boston. Durnan broke Frank Brimsek's record for consecutive scoreless games.

1950 - "Sid Abel Night" was held in Detroit. Abel was presented with many gifts including a new car. He then scored a goal in the Red Wings' 2-2 tie against Montreal.

1968 - Norm Ullman scored a goal and added two assists in his first game as a member of the Maple Leafs, after his trade from Detroit. Leafs won 7-2 over the Flyers in Toronto.

1983 - Hartford's Ron Francis scored his first career NHL hat trick as the Whalers lost 7-3 in Quebec. Francis would score 549 career NHL goals.

1990 - Quebec Nordiques traded veteran Peter Stastny to New Jersey in exchange for Craig Wolanin. Stastny was the Nordiques all time leading scorer.

1995 - Los Angeles' Jari Kurri scored his 561st NHL goal to pass Guy Lafleur into eighth place on the all-time scoring list. The Kings lost 8-2 to Dallas.

1996 - Chris Osgood became the third goalie in NHL history to score a goal, as the Red Wings won 4-2 against the Whalers at Hartford. Osgood shot the puck into an empty net.

1997 - Phoenix's Mike Gartner scored twice in 5-0 win over Tampa Bay. It gave him 30 goals for a NHL-record setting 17th time in his career.

2003 - Scott Mellanby tied a St. Louis team record with 4 power play goals in Blues 6-3 win over Phoenix. It was his first career hat trick in 1,209 NHL games.
