Syd Howe On The Money

Did you know that when Syd Howe retired in 1946 he was the NHL's all time leading scorer? He never enjoyed big money, but he was very appreciative of what he did earn:

"The most I ever got for winning the Stanley Cup was sixteen hundred dollars. In my day there were a lot of good hockey players down in the minor leagues who never made it to the top. They'd look upstairs and say, I'm never going to get up there so I might as well quit. You couldn't live very well on those salaries in the minor leagues. We lost a lot of good hockey players."

Here's more on Detroit great Syd Howe. And no, he was not related to Gordie.
