Lou Jankowski Passed Away

Not many sources reporting it, but former NHLer Lou Jankowski died on Saturday. He was 78.

Jankowski played 130 NHL games with the Red Wings and Blackhawks back in the 1950s. He lived his later years in Florida where he was a regular at Tampa Bay Lightning games.

A Great skater who "did every conceivable leg exercise" and didn't take many penalty minutes because "you can't score from the penalty box". He held the record for most points in one season in the OHA (OHL) as a member of the Oshawa Generals with 124. Record holder for most goals in one season in the WHL. (57)

He and Aunt Roseanna went out of their way to ensure he visited us in Stoney Creek at least twice a year and was ever kind to our three daughters. Even in his late 70's when his eyes tracked a balloon in the air, we could imagine him as a youngster tracking a hockey puck and having the legs to do something amazing with it. We all miss our Uncle Lou.

I noticed the obit in today's Globe. As a young man in Calgary I remember fondly the Leopold Dorahoy Jankowski line. I had almost forgotten, but fondly remembered.

Not many people know that Lou has a daughter Kathy Jankowski-Slegers heavily involved in figure skating (professionall skating coach) and power skating and hockey in Ontario with her 3 children Joshua, Jacob and Sophia. Apparently she drives just like him too- look out!!!l
