Crosby vs. Ovechkin

"Crosby is the Ivy League, scholarly center, while Ovechkin is the big-school, big-campus, fraternity-boy left wing. Crosby is a movie star; Ovechkin is a rock star."
Tell me your thoughts on Crosby vs. Ovechkin, but remember to keep it clean!

My thoughts on Crosby vs. Ovechkin - don't make the same mistake I made when the debate was Gretzky vs. Lemieux.

Crosby VS. Ovechkin

Crosby and Ovechkin, the two young players battle to win the eastern conference, the Stanley cup, the hart trophy (MVP) and most importantly: the hearts of all fans around the world and to be deemed the “face” of the NHL.

Alexander Ovechkin a young vigorous and prosperous 23 year old Russian hockey player, has captured the hearts and minds of fans around the world. Ovechkin is known for his mind boggling goals, specifically, his on the ice diving behind the back goal, finishing with his controversial yet enthusiastic celebrations, his caveman-like looks and his ability to perform and excel in the NHL. You never know what your are going to see next with this guy!

Sydney Crosby, a modest 21 year-old from Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia has always been a fan favorite across North America for his exceptional offensive playing techniques and his love for the game. Crosby is known for his quick passes, his immature beard growing capability, his amazing leadership skills and the talent he has brought to the NHL and the talent he is going to be bringing in the years to come.

Both Players were drafted first overall in 2003 and 2004, although they were both rookies in the same year due to the season postponement of the lockout. Both players have an outstanding resume in regards to records and awards. Crosby has won 8 awards in his five years of experience. Ovechkin has won an unbelievable 15 awards in his 5 years of play.

Both of these young, outstanding, and prosperous players guarantee a bright future for the NHL that is so desperately needed for a sport that lacks popularity and fans across the U.S.

Crosby is a much better team player, and will always be the best in the world. Ovechkin is a lazy and selfish, yet talented player and nothing more.

Ovechkin is almost as talented as Crosby, but he is bigger and faster, and has a supernatural positioning for getting the puck in the goal. I support Canada but I will bet on Russia.

Truth?

Who changes the game? Ovechkin.

Would Crosby have made that hit on Jagr the other night that allowed his linemates to waltz in and score? No. I think not.

Ovi is a game changer.

That said, he is NOT comparable to Crosby.

1) They play two different positions.
2) They play two different styles of game.
3) They are completely different players.

Crosby's good. Ovechkin is a game-changer.

They are both great players and they definitely with different styles. Ovechkin is like a tornado on the Ice that will simply blow you away. Crosby on the other hand is like a river quiet and consistent. He just keeps coming and will wear you down. They are both incredibly gifted in their own ways. I prefer Ovechkin for his reckless abandon. But anyone who hates on either is a Homer McIdiot.

Tonight shall tell the tale!! GO CROSBY and TEAM CANADA!

OV is a great team player. These generalizations get you nowhere and make you look petty.

Ovechkin plays with a lot of Euros & so-so defensivemen & needs to play on the edge to help his team. He plays a different game than Crosby.

Crosby is a well-rounded player who knows what he does well and plays within himself.

Both are great players. The only difference is Crosby's a chronic ref-whiner and also seems to resent Ovi's fame (even though SC won the SC), but he'll always be Canada's favorite as the home-town boy in the bastion of hockey.

Viva la diifference!

Who would you build your team around given the choice? I'd take Ovechkin. Ovechkin has the physical edge and is a better goal scorer. Both have tremendous amounts of talent, but Ovechkin is the slightly better overall package.

Greatness should be measured when it counts most, in a playoff run for the cup or when playing for your country.

Crosby beat ovi on the cup run last year. Crosby beat ovi in the world juniors. Crosby beat ovi in the olympics. Some will argue that it was coaching and not crosby hitting ovi into the ground, but a truly great player can overcome and elevate.

In the end, Crosby makes everyone better around him, and when it counts most he has shown he can rise to the occasion. He doesnt have the same flash as ovi, but certainly you would have to say his team resume is better than any of the 15 individual awards ovi has won

Sid, by a long shot... but the script is still being written

i say it is ovechkin by a long shot.

I will start with a rebuttal to the previous post about crosby's team resume. Winning the cup, gold medal world juniors is not a sidney crosby accomplishment, it is a team accomplishment, and every time they have met each other in those tournaments, crosby has been on the stronger team. Team canada obviously has more depth than any russian team has, and in the olympics, other than the goal in the last game was not even a factor, especially in the game vs russia.

In the playoffs ovechkin showed up carrying his team on his back. Crosby played well also, but had much more support. for one, goaltending, marc andre fleury was a veteran up against a rookie varlamov. And not to mention had malkin and staal etc. carrying the load.

In terms of talent and contribution, ovechkin has averaged over 50 goals per season, including 52 goals in his rookie season.

From that, we know that ovechkin is a MUCH better goal scorer. Why is that relevant? because having a player who can score that many goals is worth WAY more than a player who contributes as many assists. For every goal, there are 2 assists, which means that is twice as common to get an assist than a goal.

And it take much more talent to finish on a scoring chance, than it is to get an assist, because many times a secondary assist can come by merely touching a puck that goes to another player who makes the great pass to the scorer.

goals> assists.

also, Crosby is boring as hell. Ovechkin is exciting and fun to watch. passionate and inspiring. Media praise crosby during the olympics even when he does not contribute anything to the game at times.

If ovechkin was canadian, i truly believe that we wouldn't talk about crosby the way we do now. To be honest, crosby is not always the best player on his own team.

Great players reveal themselves when they rise to meet the challenges their teams face.

In the Olympics, when their teams beckoned, Crosby took the call by scoring the overtime winner in the gold medal game. Ovechkin? Couldn't even get close to a medal.

Stanley Cup championships? How about two consecutive trips to the finals, and a victory at 21 years of age.

I don't think anyone can argue that Ovechkin isn't the flashier player. So many of his goals are jaw-dropping displays of talent. But I believe he is more one-dimensional than Crosby. He is also considerably more reckless.

Crosby has shown he can score (his scoring percentage is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than Ovechkin's this year), he can make amazing plays (unlike earlier contentions, Crosby usually has the first assist, not the second), and he can lead. Ovechkin, like Crosby, is also a captain, but I don't see nearly the same leadership from him.

But what sets Crosby apart most n my books is his willingness and ability to evolve his game for the good of the team. Just look ho much his goal scoring and face-off percentage has improved over the years. His coaches also laud his much-improved defensive-zone play and have rewarded him with PK time he never got before.

If hockey were about highlight reels, I would choose Ovechkin. But hockey is a team sport, about putting collective goals ahead of your own, and winning championships. As a result, I choose Crosby.

its all crosby... both talented... ovie has more points but thats a player being better while crosby make the team better.... in the end its all about the big games that matter... i love both but you can finish first in the nhl every year but never win a cup in the playoffs.... crosby makes that happen same with world juniors and olympics... crosby simply because he already left a way bigger legacy then ovie.

Ovechkin is better..crosby vs Ovi..OVI wins because crosby is protected by the refs. touch him..face 2 mins in the box.. ovechkin plays harder and has a better style of play. crosby runs from the corners and sits out near the opp blue line for a break away.

just cuz hes from canada dosnt mean he must be number 1..face it

oh and by the way. its not OVI vs crosby...*no I in team* they cant do ANYTHING without a team with them

Obviously Backstrom, Semien and Green are second rate players compared to the Penguins supporting cast….. Both team had excellent rosters during that series! Heck, Pittsburgh had to win without their top D-men because of a questionable knee-on-knee hit. The better player was able to elevate his own play along with his teams play. Has anyone truly stopped to look at were Crosby generates the majority of his goals and assist from…… in the dirty areas in front of the net and from in the corners and along the boards. Ovi on the other hand shoots from out on the perimeter and either blows the puck by the goalie or a teammate bangs home the rebound. Crosby plays anything but a typical superstars game… he is the king of the Grinders!!!

...Crosby is the better all-around player. You get 100 per cent effort every shift from Sid - he works the boards, wins face-offs, makes insane passes, scores, back checks, blocks shots, carries the puck out of his own zone ... then he does a great TV interview. What more could you ask of an NHL superstar?
OV can score goals, but he lacks a certain something in all those other categories.
All this being said, if I owned an NHL francise, I'd gladly take either one of them!

ovechkin is the better player because he scores way more then crosby even though alex is rougher then sid!

Both players are two gifted players and two of the greatest hockey players in the league right now. If you are going to have one on your team. It would be a hard choice but i would pick Sidney Crosby because he is one of the best centremen in the league. Any of his linesmates like Kunitz and Dinpuis with Crosby are getting better. Crosby said that his was going to shoot more and he beat the Great 8 two years ago. Last year, Crosby had his point streak and no one could touch him until he got his concussion which slow him down and cause him to stop. Crosby is a better leader than the Great 8 because he has got his team to the finals and won the Stanley Cup. Plus look at both Crosby and Ovechkin lines mates Crosby got Kunitz and Duspuis and Ovechkin got Backstrom and Semin and you are saying Oveckin better. Oveckin got Semin and Backstrom who are 1 and 2 line mates Kunitz and Duspuis are 3 liners. Yes, Ovechkin is a amazing player but he can be selfish while Crosby does pass more than his shoot. that why crosby is better than ovechkin to me
