On this day in 1985, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 12-9, in Chicago, in the highest scoring game in modern NHL history. Wayne Gretzky does not score a goal, but has a record 7 assists, one of the three times in his career he accomplished that feat. Jari Kurri scores a hat trick, while Glenn Anderson joins the line on this night, and scored 3 goals and 3 assists.

Even though they scored 12 times, the Oilers were 0 for 1 on the power play. The Hawks were much more lethal at 3 for 4.

The Oilers fired 44 shots at goalies Murray Bannerman and Bob Sauve. The Hawks fired 46 shots on Edmonton's two goalies, Grant Fuhr and Andy Moog.

By The Way 1: The Minnesota North Stars were also in a scoring mood that night. Brian Bellows scored four goals and Scott Bjugstad notched three goals, both registering their first career hat tricks as the Minnesota North Stars' dumped Detroit 10-2.
