Every Friday I answer mail in my weekly "Ask The Hockey History Blogger" segment.The tradition of naming the three stars at a hockey game goes all the way back to the 1936-37 season.
That year Imperial Oil became the main sponsor of Hockey Night In Canada radio broadcasts. They came up with the idea of naming three stars after each game as a way to promote it's "3 Star" brand of gasoline featured at Esso stations.
The three star selections has remained a big part of hockey tradition, though Imperial Oil no longer is the sponsor. In fact, every rink and most broadcasts have different sponsors for the post-game ceremony.
