Another Messier In Edmonton

The Edmonton Journal has an interesting story about Mark Messier's son Lyon trying out for the new WHL franchise Edmonton Oil Kings. It may be mostly a publicity stunt by an expansion franchise in a city where major junior hockey has really struggled in the recent past, but it is an interesting story for late August.

He has carried his famous name about as lightly as is possible, but then, Lyon Messier hasn't played in the Heartland of Hockey.

Not yet.

The oldest son of hockey icon Mark Messier was born in Virginia, played minor hockey in the Detroit area, Jr. B in Windsor, Ont., for the Tecumseh Chiefs and, most recently, for the Texas Tornado in the North American Hockey League in his brief but far-flung hockey journey.

He hopes to stick around Edmonton for a while, though. Which is why Lyon Messier is competing for a job with the WHL's Oil Kings as a 20-year-old over-ager. What's more, he's been out there in St. Albert, his dad's hometown, skating at the Performance Arena at Servus Place, an indoor multi-playground that also has an ice sheet named for the town's No. 1 son, one Mark Messier.
