Why not a Super Summit Series?

Over at my other website 1972 Summit Series.com I've covered the breaking news of a Hockey Canada proposal for Summit Series II in 2008.

But I also suggested that such a series, proposed to be a pre-Olympic warm up, would be unfair to other nations, and that maybe we should create the Super Summit Series.

I think this tournament will come one day. I forecast an end to Olympic participation after Vancouver 2010, while the World Cup still leaves a bit to be desired.

Having Summit Series II would be great, but the other top hockey nations would have to be better involved. Why not create a Super Summit Series? Have Canada take on the Russians in the immortal rivalry. Sweden and Finland could go at it over 8 games. The Czechs vs. the Slovaks. Let's make it really global and let the lesser lights go at it too - Belarus vs. Latvia and Germany vs. Ukraine. Let's let the women's teams from Canada and USA go at it.

Of course, with Canada already squaring off against Russia, what to do with Team USA would be the major question of this tournament set up. USA vs. Switzerland? USA vs. The World, a team made up of all the lesser countries combined?

Ah, as in all international tournaments whether it is the Olympics, the World Cup, the Canada Cup, or the World Championships, there's never has been a perfect tournament. But hey, a hockey fan can dream.
