1981 Canada Cup rings

There was a time I considered myself to be a bit of an expert on the Canada Cup of Hockey. And I still geek out when I learn anything new about the tournament.

I had no idea of the existence of 10k gold and diamond rings issued to the players of Team Canada in 1981 until now.

The November 2023 offerings from ClassicAuctions.net included this ring that was formerly from the personal collection of Bob Gainey, star left winger on the team. at $1700 USD, it was one of the more affordable options from the catalog.

Gainey also offered up his 1986 Stanley Cup championship ring (over $15,000), 1992 NHL All Star Game ring ($1700) and a special Dallas Stars ring ($1700) when the team won 5 consecutive regular season division titles.

Here's the ClassicAuctions.net write up on the Canada Cup ring:

Originally from the personal collection of Bob Gainey, we have the ring that was presented to the former Habs’ captain and HOF superstar Bob Gainey for his participation with Team Canada. Size 9 ½ with an approx weight of 17 grams, a Team Canada half maple leaf sits raised on the tableau, encompassed by “Coupe Canada Cup” in raised letters, with four small diamonds inserted beneath. “19” appears on one shank in raised numerals, with “81” in matching font gracing the other. Stamped "10K" on the inner band, there is moderate wear throughout from use, with numerous small scratches over the bands and shanks, with a few dings also visible along edges. A signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany this patriotic ring.
