Michael Stone

Summer time is retirement season for NHL news. Let's recognize the players who are hanging up the skates, starting with Calgary's depth defender Michael Stone.

Born on June 7, 1990, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Michael Stone was known for his defensive prowess, versatility, and unwavering commitment to the game. His passion for hockey was ignited at a young age. He began his hockey journey in various youth leagues, where his skills and dedication quickly set him apart. Stone's talent led him to the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he joined the Calgary Hitmen. During his time with the Hitmen, he showcased his defensive abilities and emerged as a reliable defenseman, catching the attention of NHL scouts.

Stone's professional career took off when he was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes (now known as the Arizona Coyotes) in the third round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. After honing his skills in the American Hockey League (AHL), Stone made his NHL debut in the 2010-2011 season. He played parts of five seasons in the desert before a 2017 trade took him home to Calgary, where he rounded out his career over the next seven years.

Stone's defensive excellence became evident throughout his NHL journey. His exceptional shot-blocking skills, physicality, and hockey IQ quickly made him a quality NHL defender. Stone's ability to read the game, anticipate plays, and neutralize opposing forwards made him a reliable presence on the blue line.

Beyond his defensive skills, Stone's leadership qualities also shone through. He became a respected figure in the locker room, known for his calm demeanor and strong work ethic. Stone's ability to make smart decisions under pressure and his willingness to sacrifice his body for the team's success made him a valuable asset.

Stone's versatility further elevated his value as a defenseman. He showcased the ability to play on the penalty kill, power play, and contribute offensively when needed. His powerful shot and willingness to join the rush made him a threat in the offensive zone, providing an extra dimension to his game.

Throughout his career, Stone's contributions significantly impacted team success. His defensive reliability and leadership skills played a crucial role in stabilizing the blue line, providing a solid foundation for his team's success. Stone's shot-blocking ability often proved to be a game-changer, frustrating opponents and preserving leads.

Furthermore, Stone's impact extended beyond statistics. He served as a mentor to younger players, fostering a positive team culture and contributing to overall team cohesion. Stone's dedication to the game and relentless work ethic inspired his teammates, pushing them to elevate their performance.

In 2023 Stone retired and took on a coaching role with the Calgary Flames organization. Stone realized his roster spot on the Flames was nearing an end but he and his family did not want to leave the city. It was the perfect opportunity for Stone to write the next chapter in his life.

In 552 NHL games Michael Stone scored 41 goals and 104 assists for 145 points, but will always be remembered as a quality defensive depth player and great teammate.
