On September 15th, 1960, Montreal's greatest hockey legend Maurice "Rocket" Richard hung up his sweater for the last time as he announced his retirement from the game.
He announced his retirement at a press conference at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel.
"My decision has now been made. It has not been an easy decision for me to make but I knew the day would come sometime.
"I owe a debt to the hockey fans which I can never repay.
Gordie Howe was asked about his rival's decision.
"There aren't any tears but I'm sorry to see him leave," Howe said.
He praised Richard as one of the all time greats.
"The Rock is the Rock and that's all there is to that," he said
