The "Rediscovered" Lafleur-Lemieux Photo

Much of the hockey world is talking about this rediscovered photo:

The photo, from March 4th, 1981, shows Guy Lafleur acknowledging the crowd. The crowd is giving him a standing ovation because he just recorded his 1,000th career point in the NHL.

Standing directly behind Lafleur is a 15 year old kid who absolutely worships "The Flower." But it's not just any other kid. It is Mario Lemieux.

It is a classic shot of hero worship, but it is more than that. This is two superstars, one at an NHL milestone, the other having just finished his midget-class season, bound to become a major-junior sensation and, in time, another of the greatest players the game had ever seen," writes Dave Stubbs, the Montreal Gazette writer who rediscovered the photo.

Stubbs tells how he rediscovered the photo and shares more about this juncture in history in this article here.

Incidentally, Lemieux and Lafleur were also two of only three Hockey Hall of Famers to return to the game after being inducted.
