Paul Henderson And The Surgical Mask

Longtime NHLer Paul Henderson will forever go down as a Canadian hockey hero. But did you know he once played a NHL game while wearing a surgeon's mask?

It happened back in 1966 when Henderson was still playing for the Detroit Red Wings. Here's the photographic proof:

Henderson only played the one game with the mask. He missed 6 others. He was suffering from "trachiatis," an infection of his trachea, or his windpipe.

After another stint in the hospital the Red Wings sent him to Arizona where the hot, dry air helped kill the infection.
