Charles Uksila

This is Charles Uksila - the first player born, raised and trained in the Unites States to ever play for the Stanley Cup!

Uksila did so in 1916 as a member of the Portland (Oregon) Rosebuds of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Portland was the first US based team to ever play for the Stanley Cup that same year but they lost to the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey Association (forerunner to the National Hockey League). It was Les Canadiens first ever Stanley Cup championship.

Uksila was a native of Calumet, Michigan who began playing pro hockey in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He later played senior hockey in Detroit and Portland before joining the pr ranks with the PCHA. He played two seasons in Portland and in 1918 joined the Vancouver Millionaires. He was generally a substitute player in the days when the stars played the entire game. he was described as small but fast and hard working.

He later served as a referee and taught professional figure skating.
