Back in the late 1970s and at least as far as 1980 Hockey Night In Canada intermissions featured something called NHL Showdown. Filmed in the summer and shown throughout the season, the special was a pre-cursor to the NHL Skills Competition seen at the All Star Game nowadays. Many of the NHL's top shooters and goaltenders got together and were put through a series of exciting events. The CBC and the NHLPA collaborated on the TV show, though many NHL teams tried to block player participation due to fear of injury.
