Great Moments In Hockey History: Steve Smith's Big Mistake

April 30, 1986: On his 23rd birthday, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Steve Smith watched in horror as his attempted breakout pass from the side of the net ricocheted off goaltender Grant Fuhr's left leg and into his own net. The "own goal" snapped a 2-2 tie with 14:46 left in the third period and Calgary held on for a 3-2 victory in Game 7 of the Smythe Division Final, preventing Edmonton from pursuing a third straight Cup.

Fortunately Smith, who cried heavily on the ice immediately after the gaffe, never allowed this terrible moment to define his lengthy and successful career. The very next year the Oilers won the Stanley Cup again, and captain Wayne Gretzky made sure the first person he handed the Stanley Cup to was big Steve Smith.
