This Day In Hockey History: May 20th


1965 - Detroit Red Wings acquired Andy Bathgate, Billy Harris and Gary Jarrett from the Toronto Maple Leafs, in exchange for Marcel Pronovost, Aut Erickson, Larry Jeffrey, Ed Joyal, and Lowell MacDonald.

1966 - Wren Blair was named the General Manager of the expansion Minnesota North Stars, a year and a half before their first NHL game. Blair later was also named their first NHL coach.

1968 - Los Angeles Kings obtained Skip Krake from Boston in exchange for the Kings' 1970 first round draft choice. The Bruins later used the pick to select Reggie Leach.

1975 - Fog on the ice delayed Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Sabres and Flyers in Buffalo. Then during the game Jim Lorentz killed a bat with his stick. Rene Robert's overtime goal at 18:29 won it for the Sabres 5-4.

1979 - Winnipeg beat Edmonton 7-3 in the final game of the final WHA playoff championship series (for the Avco Cup). Oilers' Dave Semenko scored the final goal in the history of the WHA.

1985 - Terry O'Reilly announced his retirement, after playing 13 seasons with the Boston Bruins.

1997 - Mighty Ducks of Anaheim fired Ron Wilson, who had been the team's head coach for the team's first 4 NHL seasons.
