1955 - Toe Blake made his NHL coaching debut as the Montreal Canadiens beat Toronto 2-0. Jacques Plante got his 11th career shutout.

1980 - NY Islanders traded goaltender Richard Brodeur and a future fifth-round choice (Moe Lemay) to Vancouver, in exchange for Vancouver's fifth round choice (Jacques Sylvestre) in the 1981 Entry Draft.

1984 - Mike Keenan picked up his first NHL coaching victory, with a 4-1 Flyers' win over the Washington Capitals at the Spectrum.

1992 - Mario Lemieux began a team-record 12 game goal scoring streak in the Penguins' 3-3 tie against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.

1992 - Philadelphia rookie Eric Lindros scored his first NHL goal in the Flyers' 3-3 tie with the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

1996 - Tony Granato, in his second game back from a career-threatening brain surgery in February '96, scored his 6th career hat trick (and his first with San Jose) and added an assist in the Sharks' 7-6 overtime win, at Los Angeles.

2001 - Michigan State tied Michigan 3-3 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, before 74,554 fans, breaking a hockey attendance record that had stood for 41 years. The crowd braved temperatures hovering just above freezing with wind gusts reaching 30 mph.

In 1962, the Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs played the NHL All-Stars. I was born just after the game ended. Toronto won (I think).
