Hockey's First Helmet

Yesterday we were looking to make a list of bareheaded battlers of the 1980s and 1990s. Which inevitably led to the question, "Who was the first player to wear a helmet?"

The answer is believed to be George Owen, a standout Boston Bruins defenseman. When the former Harvard hockey/football star first broke into the league in 1928, he is said to have worn his leather football helmet.
