Pat Quinn Replaced As Head Coach

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that Pat Quinn has stepped down as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers. Tom Renney will replace him.

It is unfortunate that this news and the Scott Niedermayer retirement announcement upstage the Hockey Hall of Fame induction announcement. This is doubly unfortunate for Quinn. The big Irishman is a co-chair on that committee and was scheduled to take part in media conferences today.

One day I hope Pat Quinn gets another chance at a Hall of Fame press conference one year soon. Only that breaking news will announce his own rightful induction in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

It’s a shame, but I fear that this may be the last we see of Pat Quinn coaching in the NHL.

30 years of dedication without having his name on the Cup. Too bad, I really like the Big Guy.

My favourite Pat Quinn story isn't the stick-breaking tantrum in Vancouver, though; it's one from my wife (who isn't a hockey fan). She knew who Pat was because I liked him. I think he was coaching the Leafs at the time and the colour guy had made a remark about Pat having several daughters and no sons. My wife said, "Wow, I wouldn't want to be the guy who brought his daughter home after curfew!"
