Who is Lionel Hitchman?

If you've ever had a chance to go to a hockey or basketball game in Boston, you have undoubtedly strained your neck looking up at the incredible collection of championship banners hanging from the rafters.

Also up there are retired numbers of Bruins and Celtics greats. Ice legends so honoured include Eddie Shore (2), Bobby Orr (4), Dit Clapper (5), Phil Esposito (7), Cam Neely (8), Johnny Bucyk (9), Milt Schmidt (15), Terry O'Reilly (24) and Ray Bourque (77).

Those are all pretty recognizable names, but there is one other jersey retired up there, one of a player even most Bruins fans don't know much about - Lionel Hitchman (3).

Lionel Hitchman is one of the newest biography here at Greatest Hockey Legends. I also have three other early day defenders newly profiled: Ottawa's Weldy Young, Toronto's Harry Cameron and Quebec's big man Harry Mummery.
