Virtual Advertising On The Glass

In case you missed it, the New York Rangers game last night featured virtual advertising on the glass:

Thanks to Capitals Kremlin for the image.

So what do you think? Is this the billboardization of the NHL gone too far? Or is this a good way to increase revenues?

As long as it doesn't impede my view I'm ok with it.

Nathan's hit the nail on the head. I met some folks who were testing this with NESN earlier this year, it's pretty cool technology. It's way better to have virtual billboards than real ones obstructing view.

It's certainly better than using the Gorton's fisherman as your logo, right?

They did it last year during the playoffs, too. Vaguely recall it was a financial company, but I could be wrong (Chase? Wamu?) As a blueseater, I'd rather come home and see it on Rewind than during the game. And it SURELY beats those rotating ads that some boards employ.

I am old school and am disgusted by the complete commercialization of the game. what's next " Ranger goal scored by Gomez unassisted at 17.40 is sponsored by Bud Lite and McDonalds"

penaltykiller9 says it all. in fact, let's go one step further and get rid of all traditional team names and just have sponsored teams. "Tonights game is the Chicago Coke's against the Detroit Pepsi's."

it's bad enough with some of the LED panels on the ice. stop this before it goes too far . . if it hasn't already.

Sorry, folks. Professional sports are now and always will be about money. The athletes want it from the owners who in turn want it from you. If they can't get it from you, they'll get it from advertisers who in turn *will* get it from you. You want real sports? Go play some.

garbage! why should we be pestered with over advertising while watching hockey. it's annoying, looks weird, shimmers strangely and is distracting.

I'm in Philly, and last night i had to watch my team kill a penalty with 3 min to go in the 3rd, with a one goal lead, a man without a stick, Vancouver peppering the net something hard. This was some gooood hockey. No it wasn't, cuz i had an effing 16 foot wide orange effing geico lizard ad behind my goalie!!!! Flyers fan, Rangers fan, HOCKEY FANS, we gotta get this out of the game. Purity of the game dictates ADS ON THE DASHERS, not on the glass behind the goalies. EFFING SELLOUTS, that what networks have become. Thanks for letting me rant.
