Islanders Have Chance To Embrace History

The New York Islanders were announced as the NHL Draft lottery winners tonight, assuring themselves of the first overall selection in the NHL Draft this June.

There are two standout prospects available this summer. The first is dynamic scorer John Tavares, the second is towering defenseman Victor Hedman.

Only time will tell who is judged to be the better player. Right now it seems Tavares is getting the edge as the consensus #1 choice. He may also be the obvious choice for the worst team in the league, as he is an exciting, dynamic player who would be highly marketable.

Regardless who the New York Islanders select with the first pick, I hope they embrace their great history. Instead of having all those suits on stage, I would like to see Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, and Mike Bossy on stage welcoming Tavares or Hedman to the franchise.
